This year’s competition saw more than 5,045 entries from 2,037 homebrewers located in 50 states, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico, and 13 countries. Over its 43-year history, 156,830 brews have been evaluated since the inaugural AHA National Homebrew Competition in 1979 in Boulder, Colorado.

5,045 beers were entered this year and 126 medals awarded.Īnd despite the fact that the 43 rd annual three day gathering, which concludes with the big awards, was held virtually this year, the AHA conference was still a big deal, complete with keynote speakers, a virtual expo hall, meetups, and more than 30 live seminars with access to post-event recordings. This year’s competition featured 9,189 entries from 3,492 homebrewers located throughout the United States and 17 countries. “Congratulations to this year’s winners of the National Homebrew Competition for their achievement and their commitment to the greatest hobby there is – homebrewing.” “Over the years, we’ve seen homebrewers push the envelope for what beer can be, leading the way with style awareness and ingenuity,” American Homebrewers Association Director Gary Glass said in a prepared statement. Tom Morgan of Dayton, a member of the Dayton Regional Amateur Fermentation Technologists, won a bronze in the European sour ale category.James Rupert of Germantown, a member of the Middletown Area Society of Homebrewers, won a silver in the German wheat beer category.It was the most entered category with 475 entries.

Tom Beach of Rocky River, a member of the Society of Northeast Ohio Brewers, won a gold in the specialty IPA category.Irving also won a bronze in the British and Irish stout category. Greg Irving of North Royalton and Mike Yingling of Northfield, members of the Society of Northeast Ohio Brewers, won a gold in the pale European beer category.She made the beer along with her husband Larry Reuter. Donna Reuter of Akron, a member of the Society of Akron Area Zymurgists, won a gold in the strong American ale category.The awards were handed out in 34 categories Saturday at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, Rhode Island. Ohio homebrewers performed well at the 2019 American National Homebrew Competition, bringing home six medals including three golds.
